Three fresh herrings are brought to the kitchen table and the potatoes, onion, carrots and radish sit waiting. A shaft of light breaks through onto the wet silver scales of the fresh fish and glisten. The first is taken from the string tied brown paper parcel placed on the board with the knife keen and ready to prepare while the other two look to swim clear against the oncoming vegetable waves.
